Remarkable Swords golfer, Cian Arthurs, who is a member of Roganstown Golf Club has been selected to play on the European team, in the Flightmasters Trophy 2016 taking place in California later this week. The team flew out last Sunday amid great expectations of success.
The Flightmasters Trophy is for one-armed golfers and is played just like the Ryder Cup every two years between Europe and the USA. This year’s competition is eagerly anticipated and 24 year-old Cian, who plays off six handicap told the County Leader about how his involvement with the team developed. “There are three Irish players on the team and I’m the only one from Dublin. My game is good at the moment and we have a strong team going into the event, so we’re hopeful of repeating our great success of two years ago in Scotland,” said a determined Cian, who was a member of that victorious team and won all five of his matches.
Cian explained about the accident that caused him to lose his right arm. He said, “I lost my right arm in a lawnmower accident when I was just two year old. From then on I had to adapt to using my left hand. I took up golf, as my brother, Eoin Arthurs is one of Ireland’s best amateurs over the past few years and has won the coveted East of Ireland title, among others. I always looked up to him and I took up golf as a result.
Cian is an inspirational young man and an example to anyone who feels they cannot do something. “I like to try to do things that people say I couldn’t do, just to prove them wrong. I played in the World Championship earlier this year and I reached the quarter final, being beaten by the eventual runner-up.”
Inspirational Cian, who can drive the golf ball as far and as accurately as any of the top players is an example to people who feel they can’t achieve their goals. “I always believe that if you put your mind to something and try hard enough, you can achieve anything. You just need to stay positive and never think that you won’t or you can’t, always think that I can and I will,” he said.
