LSL Senior Div 1
Swords Celtic 4-2 Verona
Verona lined out against Swords Celtic with a number of changes from last week-end's game against John Bosco, due to some players not been available. It was Swords first competitive game under their new floodlights and it made for a lovely setting.
Swords took the the lead, on 25 minutes, when Gavin Logan headed home from a corner kick. Verona equalised five minutes later, in similar circumstances, with Robbie Pearson also heading home from a corner kick, despite Keith Mc Cracken`s effort to clear the ball. The sides were level 1-1 at the interval. Verona started the second half very sluggish and Swords took full advantage. They had a 25 minute purple patch and struck three times with two goals from Barry Caulfield and a nicely taken goal from Liam Hudson sandwiched in between to take a commanding 4-1 lead. At this stage Verona seemed to be heading for a heavy and embarrassing defeat but to their credit they battled to get back into the game. Following the introduction of a number of substitutes from both benches, Verona scored their second goal when Eoghan Aspin finished an excellent Ian Croft cross to the net. In a bizarre last 15 minutes Verona created a host of chances. Robbie Pearson chipped the keeper, and Gavin Moore managed to tip the ball onto the crossbar before bouncing on the goal line. Ian Croft broke through the home defence and lobbed the keeper but the ball went the wrong side of the post. Eoghan Aspin brought an excellent save from Gavin Moore again when he was through in a one on one situation. In this period Verona also struck the home crossbar on two other occasions. Despite these late goal scoring chances for Verona, overall, Swords Celtic were deserving winners.
